What is Spinal Flow® Technique ?
The Spinal Flow® Technique was developed by Dr. Carli Axford with over 20 years of research, observation and clinical success. It is a healing modality rooted in chiropractic, Network Spinal Care and Craniosacral.
Spinal Flow is a gentle, non-invasive healing modality designed to reconnect the body and mind by tapping into the natural intelligence of the nervous system. This innate intelligence, which we are all born with, allows the body to interpret, adapt, and respond to its environment. Spinal Flow helps identify and release blockages within the nervous system, restoring the flow of life force energy and promoting natural healing.
At the core of this technique are the seven gateways of the spine, key areas that influence both physical and emotional well-being. When stress, trauma, or tension create blockages in these gateways, the body’s ability to communicate and heal is disrupted, leading to pain, discomfort, and emotional imbalance. By gently releasing these blockages, Spinal Flow restores the body’s natural rhythm, allowing energy to move freely, supporting self-healing, and bringing a sense of ease and alignment.

The Seven Gateways of the Spine
Each of the seven gateways represents a critical area of your spine connected to physical, emotional, and chemical balance: Blockages in these gateways can manifest as physical symptoms, emotional stress, or feelings of being “stuck.”
- Base Gateway: Your foundation, associated with grounding and stability.
- Foundation Gateway: Governs movement, creation, and reproduction.
- Power Gateway: Supports digestion and personal power.
- Center Gateway: Tied to the heart and emotions, fostering love and connection.
- Passion Gateway: Enables communication and self-expression.
- Pause Gateway: Bridges the mind and body, creating inner calm.
- Awaken Gateway: Aligns your entire spine, connecting you to your highest self.
How Does Spinal Flow Work?
The technique focuses on enhancing areas of ease within the nervous system, helping the body move out of “fight-or-flight” mode and into a state of relaxation and healing. Here’s how:
- Assessment of the Body’s Intelligence: As your Spinal Flow practitioner, I assess your body holistically, identifying areas where the natural flow of nervous system intelligence is disrupted. These blockages can stem from physical, chemical, or emotional stress.
- Activation of Access Points : Gentle touches are applied to 33 access points along the sacrum (lower back), spine and cranium (skull), where the dura mater—a protective fibrous layer around the spine and brain—attaches. These points provide direct pathways to the central nervous system, enhancing communication and helping release tension.
- Facilitation of Spinal Flow: Spinal Flow activates what is known as a Central Pattern Generator (CPG)—a natural nerve circuit that creates rhythmic, wave-like movements along the spine. This “flow” is an electrophysiological and mechanical phenomenon that fosters coherence from the sacrum to the cranium, reorganizing the nervous system and creating conditions for healing. READ MORE about this phenomenon.
- Neurologic Entrainment: The nervous system adapts and aligns with the Spinal Flow, reorganizing old defense and tension patterns into steady, harmonious rhythms. Over time, this leads to improved spinal and nervous system health.
Why Spinal Flow Heals the body
- Releases Stress Patterns: Blocked energy from old injuries, trauma, or chronic stress is released, allowing the body to return to its natural rhythm of ease and healing.
- Enhances Nervous System Health: By reestablishing the flow of life force energy, Spinal Flow supports better communication between the brain and body, improving overall functionality and vitality.
- Promotes Balance and Stability: Spinal Flow helps the body reorganize itself, finding balance between stress and relaxation systems, and enabling a healthier response to daily challenges.
- Supports Self-Healing: The process empowers your body to tap into its own healing intelligence, restoring harmony without force or invasive techniques.
Who Can Benefit from Spinal Flow?
Spinal Flow® Technique is for anyone seeking to restore balance, release stress, and reconnect with their body’s natural healing intelligence. Whether you are experiencing physical pain, emotional stress, or chemical imbalances, Spinal Flow can help you move from a state of tension and discomfort to one of ease, vitality, and well-being.
Physical Conditions
Many people turn to Spinal Flow for relief from chronic or acute physical pain. By addressing spinal blockages and nervous system tension, Spinal Flow can help reduce the pain or discomfort of:
✔ Back pain (lower back, mid-back, upper back)
✔ Neck and shoulder tension/pain
✔ Headaches and migraines
✔ Sciatica and nerve pain
✔ Joint pain and stiffness
✔ Postural imbalances (e.g., scoliosis, kyphosis)
✔ Digestive issues (IBS, bloating, constipation)
✔ Sleep disturbances (insomnia, restless sleep)
✔ Chronic fatigue and low energy
✔ Fibromyalgia and muscle tightness
✔ Autoimmune-related discomfort
By releasing blockages along the spine, Spinal Flow allows for improved mobility, reduced inflammation, and a natural return to pain-free movement.
Emotional & Mental Well-Being
Your emotional experiences don’t just exist in the mind—they are stored in your body, often as tension, postural changes, or chronic discomfort. Spinal Flow helps release deeply held emotional patterns and supports:
✔ Anxiety & stress relief
✔ Depression & low mood
✔ Emotional trauma recovery
✔ Overwhelm and burnout
✔ Nervous system dysregulation
✔ Feeling “stuck” in life
✔ Lack of mental clarity and focus
Spinal Flow works by gently shifting the body out of fight-or-flight mode, creating a sense of calm, clarity, and inner peace.
Chemical & Inflammatory Imbalances
Inflammation, environmental toxins, and diet-related stressors can disrupt the nervous system and contribute to chronic conditions. Spinal Flow helps the body process and release:
✔ Hormonal imbalances
✔ Adrenal fatigue & burnout
✔ Thyroid dysfunction
✔ Inflammatory conditions (arthritis, joint pain, skin issues)
✔ Allergies & sensitivities
✔ Toxic buildup from chemicals, medications, or stress
By restoring the nervous system’s ability to communicate with the body, Spinal Flow enhances detoxification, immune function, and overall cellular health.
The Power of Consistency: Frequent Spinal Flow Sessions Are Essential for Deep Healing
- Receiving Spinal Flow frequently and consistently is essential to experiencing the profound results that this healing modality is known for. Just as the physical, chemical, and emotional layers accumulate in our bodies over time, true healing and the release of blockages also take time.
- Spinal Flow works cumulatively—each session builds upon the last, deepening the body’s ability to release stored tension, stress, and restrictions.
- Everyone’s healing journey is unique, and the way each person responds to Spinal Flow varies, as different layers release at different times. That’s why consistency is key.
- After 12 treatments, I will reevaluate your posture, gateways, and blockages, looking for shifts in your physical, chemical, and emotional symptoms. While changes are expected at this stage, another set of 8 to 12 treatments is recommended to allow for deeper transformation and lasting relief. Maintenance treatment is recommended to continue the healing process and support the progress you’ve made.
- By committing to this process, you are giving your body the time and support it needs to fully unwind, heal, and return to a state of balance.
Spinal Flow: Your Body, Your Healing, Your Responsibility
Creating the Best Environment for Healing
Spinal Flow is a powerful healing tool, but true transformation happens when you actively support your body in all aspects of your life. Your body is doing the healing, and by cultivating the best possible environment—physically, emotionally & spiritually—you allow that healing to happen more quickly and deeply. What you do outside of your sessions is just as important as the treatments themselves.
Supporting Your Body Beyond Spinal Flow
- Nourish Your Body – Proper nutrition, hydration, and movement provide the foundation for healing. What you put in your body influences how well it can repair and restore itself.
- Regulate Your Nervous System – Healing happens when the nervous system shifts out of survival mode. Gentle movement, conscious breathing, and relaxation techniques help solidify your Spinal Flow progress.
- Cultivate Emotional Resilience – Emotional stress creates physical blockages. Mindfulness, breathwork, journaling, and self-care help release stored tension and promote balance.
- Evaluate Your Environment – The people, energy, and information you engage with affect your healing. Are your relationships, thoughts, and activities supporting or depleting you?

Research Articles:
The Network Spinal Wave as a Central Pattern Generator
This article explains the research on a unique spinal wave visibly observed in association with network spinal analysis care. Since 1997, the network wave has been studied using surface electromyography (sEMG), characterized mathematically, and determined to be a unique and repeatable phenomenon. The network wave involves a visible undulation and specific rocking movement of spinal segments, which is elicited through gentle contacts in a defined sequence to the spine at specific areas. The areas are associated with the location of meningeal attachments of the spinal cord to the vertebral column. READ MORE
